Dreaming of God is a dream about scale. Something in the night was larger than your ordinary will: a voice, a light, a silence, a face, a weather. The useful question is not "was it real?" first. The useful question is what the figure was doing. Rescue, verdict, conversation, and absence are four different relationships. Your tradition, if you have one, is part of the data. So is last week's crisis. This is not a prophecy and not a punishment notice.
A Voice Without a Face

Voice-only dreams are about address. Someone or something is treating you as a you, which is already more intimate than a symbol chart. Write the words if they survived waking. Then check them against your life the way you would check any striking thought: is this kinder than your usual critic, or harsher? Is it asking for a repair you already owe, or for a grand gesture that would wreck your week?
Secular dreamers get this version too. The "voice of God" can be the voice of a dead parent, a teacher, or the part of you that is not currently in charge. Continuity is blunt. If you have been praying, arguing with God, or pointedly not praying, the night has material.
Seeing a Face, a Form, or Light Too Bright to Look At

Form is a concession the dream makes so you can relate. People raised with images of Jesus often get that face. People raised with a ban on images often get light, fire, or a mountain. Neither is more authentic. Overwhelming brightness usually means the content is bigger than your current container: a truth, a grief, a calling, a shame. Squinting is information. So is whether you wanted to look.
If the form was ordinary, sitting at a table, walking a road, the dream may be trying to make the ultimate local. That can be comfort. It can also be a wish that the large thing would finally be someone you could argue with.

Judgement dreams attach to conscience and to fear of exposure. They are common after harm you have done and also in people whose inner weather is already punitive. The difference is the morning test: is there a specific repair, or only a fog of being bad? Specific repair is usable. Fog is often an old voice, a parent, a school, a pulpit, still running.
Storms without a speaker can be the same night in landscape form. If you bargained, you were already in a relationship. If you hid, the relationship currently feels unsafe. Safety in a God-dream is allowed to be a psychological need, not only a doctrinal one.
God Is Kind, and You Were Comforted
A hand, a laugh, a "I know," a sense of being accompanied in a terrible week.
Comfort dreams are underestimated because they do not make good omens. They are often exactly what they feel like: the mind staging care at a scale the week has not provided. Grief, illness, and loneliness generate them. So does relief after a long stretch of self-attack. You do not have to decide whether the comfort was "from God" in order to use it. You can let the nervous system have the rest, then see whether any human-scale comfort is missing in daylight.
If the kindness felt undeserved, that is frequently the point. Some inner courts do not adjourn without a larger authority.

You Argue, Bargain, or Ask and Get Silence
A conversation. Terms. A deal. Or: you ask, and the sky stays sky.
Bargaining is a known grief and crisis posture. The dream reproduces it because waking life is already doing it: if I am good, let this scan be clear; if I leave, protect the children. Silence is not a clever insult from the universe. It is a picture of unanswered petition, which is one of the hardest human states. Praying with no reply is the close cousin.
People leaving a faith often get silence dreams for months. The old address still exists in the psyche. The mail is not being collected. That is loss. It deserves the same gentleness as other losses, not a lecture about unbelief.
You Are Looking for God and Cannot Find Them
A church with no altar, a sky that will not open, a rumour that God was here yesterday.
Search dreams are about a missing centre. Meaning, leadership, a parent, a future, a moral north. The object of search may be named God because that is the largest word you have. Notice where you looked. A childhood church points at an old map. A hospital points at a medical week. A family kitchen points at who used to be the meaning-maker at home.
Finding a substitute, an angel, a stranger, a dog, is often the psyche offering a smaller companion. That can be wisdom rather than failure.
God Appears as Someone You Know
A grandmother, a boss, a lover, a child, and you know, in the dream, that this is God.
The identification is the content. You have located ultimacy in a person. That can be love. It can be a warning that you have made a human being into a religion, which never ends well for either of you. If the person is dead, grief is dressing them in the largest honour available. If they are alive, check the power balance in the waking relationship.
This variant is why a generic "God means X" list fails. The face is doing the theology.

William James, writing in The Varieties of Religious Experience (1902), insisted that religious states be described from the inside without being reduced on first contact, and also without being granted automatic authority over medicine or morals. That double courtesy still helps with God-dreams. Feel the encounter. Then do not let it override a safety plan, a prescription, or another person's consent.
G. William Domhoff's continuity hypothesis predicts that people who pray, people who are angry at God, and people who were steeped in sacred language as children will dream that language. Ernest Hartmann's 2011 account of dreaming as emotion contextualised in pictures explains why the picture is so large: the emotion is large. Antti Revonsuo's threat-simulation idea is a poorer fit unless the night was a chase. More often these are attachment and meaning dreams wearing the biggest available figure.

You can take the dream to a trusted person in your tradition, or to a therapist who will not mock it, or to both. What you should not do is treat a night image as a command to harm yourself, leave a child, or refuse medical care. Ultimate-sounding instructions that wreck ordinary ethics are a reason to get help, not a reason to obey.
