REM Sleep Calculator

About how much of that night was REM, and when the dream-rich stretch fell.

Estimating REM sleep

How this number is chosen

The clock starts 15 minutes after you got into bed. That is the same fall-asleep allowance as the sleep cycle calculator. From there, the night is split into 90-minute cycles.

REM is placed at the end of each cycle, and the amount rises as the night goes on: 10 minutes, then 15, 20, 30, 35, and 40 from the sixth cycle on. A cycle you only partly finished counts REM only if you reached that end portion. The dream-rich stretch is the longest of those windows.

A bedtime of 11:00 pm and a wake time of 6:45 am is five full cycles after the 15 minutes to fall asleep. That estimate is 1 hour 50 minutes of REM, with the dream-rich stretch in the last 35 minutes of the fifth cycle.

Why morning dreams are the ones you remember

The first cycles of the night are mostly deep sleep. REM is brief there. Toward morning, cycles spend more of their time in REM, which is the stage most associated with vivid dreams. Waking at the end of that last stretch is when a dream is easiest to catch.

An alarm in the middle of a cycle can miss that window, or cut it short. The figure here is still a pattern, not a recording. Your cycles may be shorter or longer than 90 minutes, and illness, alcohol, and a short night all change how much REM you actually get.

What this estimate does not do

It does not measure your sleep. There is no sensor. It only applies an average shape to two times. People also misjudge the moment they fell asleep. The 15 minutes is an allowance, not a fact about your night.

It is not medical advice. If you are sleepy while driving, waking gasping, or exhausted most days, talk with a doctor.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the REM sleep calculator work?

It takes the time you got into bed and the time you woke. It allows 15 minutes to fall asleep, then splits the rest into 90-minute cycles. REM is counted at the end of each cycle, with more of it in later cycles. A cycle you did not finish counts only if you reached that end portion.

How much REM is in each sleep cycle?

This calculator uses 10 minutes in the first cycle, 15 in the second, 20 in the third, 30 in the fourth, 35 in the fifth, and 40 from the sixth cycle on. Those amounts sit at the end of the cycle. Real nights vary.

Does this measure my REM sleep?

No. It cannot see your stages of sleep. It applies an average pattern to the times you enter. A tracker or a lab can disagree with it, and that does not mean either figure is a diagnosis.

Why is the dream-rich stretch near morning?

Early cycles hold more deep sleep and only a short REM. Later cycles hold more REM. The dream-rich stretch is the longest of those REM windows, which is usually the last one you reached.

How is this different from the sleep cycle calculator?

The sleep cycle calculator suggests a bedtime or a wake-up time that lands at the end of a cycle. This one looks backward at a night you already had, and estimates the REM in it.

For a wake-up time at the end of a cycle, use the sleep cycle calculator. If a dream stuck with you, you can interpret it.
