Dream Recall Calculator
Six questions. A score for how often a dream makes it to morning.
Question 1 of 6
A planning aid based on what you report. It does not measure your sleep, and it is not a medical test.
What the number is adding up
How many nights you remember a dream is worth 25 points. A steady wake time is worth 18. How much detail you keep, what you do in the first minute, and whether you write it down are worth 15 each. How you wake is worth 12.
The best answer earns the full weight. A weaker answer earns part of it. The worst answer earns nothing. If every answer is the strongest one, the score is 100.
The one change under the score
Under the number, the page names the question that cost the most points, and the change that matches it. Writing the dream down before the phone is the usual one. A chaotic wake time points at a steadier alarm instead, because the last cycle of the night is where REM, and the dream, tend to sit.
85 to 100 is Steady. 70 to 84 is Fairly often. 50 to 69 is Patchy. Under 50 is Rare. A rare score with a steady schedule is a different problem from a rare score with no wake time at all.
What this score does not do
It does not measure your sleep or prove that you dreamed. It only adds up what you report about a typical morning. One vivid week can look like a habit, and a blank week can follow a night that was full of dreams you simply did not catch.
It is not a medical test. If you are sleepy while driving, waking gasping, or exhausted most days, talk with a doctor.
Frequently Asked Questions
How does the dream recall calculator work?
It asks six questions: how many nights you remember a dream, how much detail stays, whether your wake time is steady, how you wake, what you do in the first minute, and whether you write the dream down. Each answer is worth points. The best answers add up to 100.
What is a good dream recall score?
85 to 100 is Steady. 70 to 84 is Fairly often. 50 to 69 is Patchy. Under 50 is Rare. The band is a plain reading of this checklist, not a measure of how meaningful your dreams are.
Why do I remember dreams some mornings and not others?
Recall is easiest when you wake from REM, often near the end of a cycle, and when you stay with the dream before the day starts. A shifting wake time, an alarm out of deep sleep, or a phone in the first minute all make the dream harder to keep.
Does a low score mean I do not dream?
No. Most people dream whether or not they remember it. A low score means the dream is not making it into the morning. Writing down even a fragment is the habit that usually moves the score.
Write the dream in your journal, or interpret it. If the score is low because mornings are chaotic, the sleep cycle calculator and the sleep debt calculator are the next place to look.
